The vegetation recovery over the last 20 years has renewed debate
about irreversible land degradation and
human management of the Sahelian ecosystem.
The views range from those holding human
mismanagement responsible for irreversible
land degradation, to those emphasizing
adaptiveness and rainfall driven responses
in both vegetation and human management.
The map shows vegetation in 1994. The small figure
shows the rainfall situation (N-S shift in 300 mm
isohyet) 1980 to 2005.
