The following pages contain maps at higher resolution (500 m as compared to 8000 m). Most of the maps are from the MODIS sensor on the TERRA satellite, but also maps of soils , geology and population from other sources are included. For selected areas there are a few Landsat TM scenes in 28.5 m resolution. Most of the zoom maps are avaialbale both as html maps ("imaps") that work in all browsers and without any need of additional software. The "imaps" are supplied with hints are sometimes "clickable". They are however a bit slow and of lower graphical quality than zoom maps based on zoomify. The zoomify maps demand installation of macromedia flash components (modern browsers fix this automatically).
The satellite image above is from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Image Spectrometre), a sensor on the TERRA satellite. It registers 36 bands of radiation (light and temperature) in 250 - 1000 m resolution. From these 36 bands many properties of the Earth's surface and atmoshere can be extracted. The map shows a natural color MODIS image from December 2004 (dry season). Click here or below the map to get to the zoom maps at 500m full resolution.
